Ingredients of Lumpia Growing up, Ginelsa and neighborhood friends started making films in 1989. Lumpia started out as an excuse to see blackbelts, Carlos (Kuya, The Lumpia Boy) and Edward Baon (Tyrone) to kick each other’s butt. The Ginelsa brothers (the director and his brother/producer, Darriel Ginelsa) watched El Mariachi from Robert Rodriguez which helped inspire them to make this film. They asked themselves, “what if there was a Filipino version instead of some Mexican superhero wielding a guitar?” Instead they came up with a guy who wears a barong and throws lumpia as his weapon.” The theme of FOB v. Filipino American born seemed to be derived from Ginelsa’s inspiration by Boyz N The Hood. This theme of prejudice was a dividing line between Filipino born high school students since plus mentality of Filipinos growing up in American. Also, the true story behind Lumpia came into light with the James character and love interest, Kelly (Elizabeth Mendoza) rather than the typical guy flicks Ginelsa and his friends produced as children. |
