Lumpia Off The Plate (2 of 3)

Grassroots Style

A keen visionary, Ginelsa matched up similar personalities to jobs in producing Lumpia. The Lumpia DVD Release Party was truly a community event. Lumpia, was considered to be a reunion of the cast of Kid Heroes, (Kid Heroes III)…largely part of the Daly City community. What makes The Lumpia DVD Release Party significantly a representation of the Filipino-a/American community was that it was an independent style advertising campaign via Friendster/myspace and basic word of mouth in contrast to The Debut involved a larger budget and distribution through Sony. In addition, the film was refilmed in 2003 mixed with the 1996 footage and the previous years; this was guerilla style filmmaking process of 7 years on and off (while Ginelsa was studying film at University of Southern California). They took the film directly to audience with the grassroots style of promotional screenings with live showcases of Filipino/a-American artists via different Filipino student college organizations across the US including Houston, New York, and Chicago.

One of their proudest accomplishments was Lumpia being in the 23rd Hawaii International Film Festival in 2000.

Straight out of FOGTOWN

His neighbor, Francis Custodio played the lead romantic role, James Moon-Moon. Custodio’s brother, Dennis Custodio, was a part of The PACK, along with Carlo Ricafort (Jart), Roy Pimentel (Philbert), who grew up to be Filipino R&B singing group, Next Phaze. They even showcased their talents singing jokingly with karaoke and other songs in the film.

Artist and Associate Producer, LeRoid David never thought of the “big picture” as he did not take all his drawings too seriously when producing the artwork for Lumpia. Winner of Growing Up Asian in America and an events coordinator of Tower Records in the Bay Area, David ended up exposing his work through Lumpia.

Ginelsa was introduced to UCLA graduate and video editor, A.J. Calomay. After watching Calomay’s trailer of Lumpia, it opened up a new world of possibilities for Ginelsa.

Mixing in LeRoid’s caricatures, comic-strip with Calomay sharp editing, Ginelsa began refilming a larger chunk of the film in 1999. Much of the Making of DVD Special Features include this excess information on the process of making the movie.
