Lumpia Off The Plate (3 of 3)Unveiling of DVD In Ginelsa’s ending speech, he announced to the crowd, “I was with the Debut and the APL song, and it’s amazing. If any of you guys can relate when you start something, whether it’s a poem or music sheet and not being able to finish that, this is what has bothered me for the last 7 years, not being able to finish it. The fact that we finally…through all the hard obstacles got to finish it. And of all places…here we are at Tower Records unveiling our own DVD, I think that’s a big accomplishment.” “You don’t have to be Filipino to love Lumpia or enjoy this music. It’s a shame that with so much of us Asian Filipino whatever in this country that there’s only a handful of CDs and movies out there for us. Isn’t there something wrong with that? and I think we’re just doing our part here. We’re not here to say that this is the best movie out there buy it and support it we’re just we’re here to continue a movement that started with The Debut, The Flipside, Better Luck Tomorrow, Harold and Kumar. Ginelsa thanked the artists. Performances included rising pianist/singer Natalise, and Next Phaze. He noted that everyone knows that Asian Pacific Islander American/Filipino (APIA) artists come from not only SF and Bay Area. He wanted to show the rest of the country, outside of the Bay Area, that our culture is very talented. Ginelsa’s empowering speech encouraged those aspiring artists to pursue their dreams. “We did this on our own. We used everything, Own resources to make sure to despite what you think of the movie, that we made it and finished it. That in itself is a big accomplishment.” From the DVD Ginelsa closes with Filipino American film as more than just movies; it’s about community involvement to help change the mainstream media. “A lot of people out there when they think of mainstream automatically believe that Filipinos don’t belong there. I refuse to believe that mainstream is this unchangeable entity and it’s thinking about outside of the box. We all have a part to play whether it’s making or supporting Filipino American cinema. I’m just trying to on of the few people trying to continue this movement. I hope this will inspire people to jump on the bandwagon.” For more information about Lumpia, check here. |
