Impact on Asians Americans
Many Asian Americans who play Diablo 2 are offended. Racism does not separate
who is from Asia or who is Asian American. Anyone who has an Asian looking
handle name are harassed online. Asian Americans and especially the Korean
American players have spoken strongly about the racism that is prevalent
among the D2 community. But the impact on Asians reach further than the
game itself. If a person in the game advocates for shooting and killing
Asians, what are the chances that this person might do it in real life?
If a person gets the impression that Asians are stupid and refer to them
as "gooks" and "chinks", will those perceptions translate
to real life dislike for Asians? The tendency though for racists is to
deny their racism when confronted through such means as to say they have
Asian friends or knows so and so who's Asian. But on the internet where
people's real identity are unknown, racists have no fear or stigma to
come out of the closet.
Blizzard has not made any statements to deal with this issue. However
when you log onto their site they have warnings against giving out your
password and account name to hackers but they have no warning whatsoever
that asks people not to harass another based on their race or gender.
So while the company is raking in huge profits from the sale of the game,
especially in Asia, Asians and Asian Americans are left to defend themselves.
The server problems are obviously the company's fault but Blizzard has
not done anything to try stop the hate.
Until more people organize around this issue of indifference on the company's
part and boycott their products, Blizzard has no reason to do anything.
