AWAKENING: A New Zine for Queer Female VietnameseÔ-Môi , the Vietnamese Lesbians, Bisexual and Transgendered People Support Network, recently produced the first issue of a bilingual zine for queer female Vietnamese, titled "Awakening." Below is a statement excerpted from Ô-Môi: Prior to AWAKENING, the only other publication about and by queer female Vietnamese was a special issue of Face to Face ( Ð?i Di?n) Magazine, a bilingual literary and art magazine on Vietnamese gays and lesbians, in 1997. Unsatiated by that first publication, Ô-Môi members envisioned another where they would have complete artistic, editorial and publication control of the product. Four years later, Ô-Môi members and friends proudly present to you our first Ô-Môi Zine issue, AWAKENING. AWAKENING is a bilingual (Vietnamese and English) collection of poems, short stories, articles, and art works by and about Vietnamese-heritaged lesbians, bisexual women, and female-to-male (FTM) transgendered individuals. AWAKENING reflects the vision of Ô-Môi members to create a resource booklet or zine that documents our lives, and shares our experiences of “Coming Out” or “Awakening”. This first issue also provides resources for individuals who are questioning or trying to come out. In that sense, AWAKENING attempts to address the needs of many queer female Vietnamese who are struggling with their gender and sexual identities. As well, it is an outlet for many more to express themselves and share their experiences. |
