Community
advocates and supporters of the tenants of the Pacific Renaissance Plaza
picketed outside of the Renaissance Parc 55 Hotel last Thursday (6/12)
in San Francisco to express outrage at mega-developer Lawrence Chan's
plan to evict low-income Asian families from 50 affordable housing units
in Oakland Chinatown. The picket took place outside while the Hong Kong
Association of Northern California, of which Chan is a board member,
was hosting a gala luncheon upstairs in Chan’s hotel.
The action is the latest organizing effort by a Bay area coalition of tenant
representatives, Asian Pacific Islander community groups and tenant right advocates
to protect the affordability of the 50 units permanently and to call Chan to
task for his misdealings in the community.
Over 60 people demanded that Chan return $2 million that he overcharged the
tenants and $7 million in public money that was used to build the Pacific Renaissance
development.
The Stop the Chinatown Evictions Committee was formed in May after
the tenants of the 50 low-income apartments in the Pacific Renaissance
Building received 90-day eviction notices from Chan, a multi-millionaire
who owns the Oakland Marriot Hotel, and the Oakland Courtyard by
Marriott Hotel in addition to the Pacific Renaissance Plaza and the
Renaissance Parc 55.Chan also operates theOaklandConvention Centerand
receives all the revenues from the center’s parking lot, and
his family’s companies own properties inHong Kongand in other parts of
Asia,Europe and North America.
