The Fight Against Development
The Pacific Renaissance tenant struggle is just one of many struggles to keep
affordable housing units within the community and to fight against gentrification.
Contrary to mainstream stereotypes, there exists a critical need in the Asian
community for affordable rental housing for low-income residents, especially
seniors.
In the San Francisco Bay area, many communities, especially low-income
communities of color, have been hard hit by the bad economy and by the city’s
placement of resources into economic development that favors businesses over
community needs.
“City resources are into new lofts and market rate housing instead of into
affordable housing for low-income communities and communities of color,” said
Adam Gold, an organizer with Just Cause Oakland. “4,693 new housing units
have either been cleared through Oakland Planning Department or are in the process – the
question is, who will benefit? The current working and low-income residents who
live in the downtown area and flatlands of Oakland – or rich suburbanites
looking to shorten their commute?”
OUR DEMANDS:
1) We want the 50 units to remain affordable for the community permanently.
2) The tenants of the Pacific Renaissance Plaza want to be able to stay in
the units. Those who have moved out already should be allowed to move back.
3) This should not happen to anyone else. We want to see changes so that we
won’t see the city getting swindled out of our money and families and
other people getting evicted again.
ACTIONS YOU CAN TAKE:
1) Call or fax Lawrence Chan and tell him what you think of his
unfair business practices! Ask him to cancel the evictions and keep the
units affordable for Oakland’s elderly Chinese community members! Demand
that Chan needs to sit down at the negotiating table with the tenants and the
community.
