The Chinese Progressive Association in San Francisco Chinatown released a report this past year showing the poor housing, health and fire code enforcement in the neighborhood. In additon they demonstrated a link to the resulting poor conditions to a wide variety of health problems of the tenants who are primarily low-income.

The community based organized surveyed nearly 200 tenants in 150 different buildings. They found almost all reported at least one violation and nearly two-thrids reported multiple violations. Violations of the health code were the most common and could be linked to high incidences of asthma, tuberculosis, infections, and accidental injuries.

Most significantly, the tenants are willing to mobilize around these conditions and support greater public actions. The full report is available here.
