Chinese American Muslim Chaplain Speaks on the US Militaryby June Hibino and Michael Liu Former U.S. Army Chaplain James Yee, the 3rd generation Chinese American Muslim chaplain who served as a minister to Muslims at Guantanamo has begun to speak out about his experiences with a prejudiced and brutal military structure. Nikkeis for Civil Rights and Redress along with other organizations in Southern California are the first community groups to sponsor James Yee in a weeklong tour. He has also appeared in various media, including the Democracy Now radio show. Yee was arrested and charged with espionage, helping al-Qaeda; then imprisoned in solitary for 76 days in 2003. All charges were eventually dropped when no evidence was found to support the case that became an embarrassment to the US military. |
