Chinese American Muslim Chaplain Speaks on the US Military (2
of 3)
Guantanamo Abuses
As a Muslim chaplain, he saw the prisoners as people. He saw
numerous abuses justified through the Bush military’s prosecution of the “War
on Terror.” He said that many prisoners deteriorated even within the
one year that he was there (most have been there for four). For example,
he mentioned two detainees permanently residing in the hospital who had become
so depressed that they stopped eating and had to be force-fed with a tube
that is inserted through their nose. One section of the camp was essentially
a psychiatric ward, where many of the prisoners regressed to the mindset
of a child. There were mass suicide attempts, where many tried to hang themselves.
These mass suicides have actually intensified with a current and growing
hunger strike in Guantanamo. Dozens of prisoners are now being force-fed.
He was also aware of many physical abuse of prisoners in interrogation.
Yee also met three boys, 12 to 14 years old. To him, they were just
kids. A pediatrician also saw that the detention of these three juveniles
was wrong and eventually, he was removed.
Yee said that the antagonism was not limited to prisoners but also to
military personnel who were Muslim. All Muslims were under suspicion.
This was the context that led to Yee’s arrest and solitary confinement.
His wife was also intimidated and lied to.
