Chinese American Muslim Chaplain Speaks on the US Military (3 of 3)

Community Support
After his charges were dropped, Yee left the military and entered graduate school. While still patriotic, he has seen that the military needs to become tolerant and support religious freedom. He had been left with legal debt defending himself of $200,000 legal bill, much of which he has worked off.

NCRR’s experience with redress and reparations for Japanese Americans had led to support for the Muslim American community since 9/11. This led to their bold decision to sponsor James Yee.

They organized programs in Little Tokyo and on campuses. From October 20 to 27, 2005,Yee spoke at UCLA, UC Irvine, Cal State campuses, Occidental College, Islamic centers, and local libraries. While NCRR coordinated the tour, co-sponsors included groups such as Asian Pacific American Legal Center, Council on American-Islamic Relations-Civil Rights Fund, Islamic Shura Council, Japanese American Citizens League- Pacific Southwest District, Muslim Public Affairs Council, Organization of Chinese Americans, Greater Los Angeles and Orange County Chapters, South Asian Network, Southern California Library.
