South Asians and other Asian Americans are organizing to protest a brutal hate crime in southeastern Massachusetts. Four men tortured, stabbed, and kidnapped a Indian graduate student, who was delivering fast food as his part time job.

Saurabh Bhalerao, worked for Sarducci's Subs and delivered a pizza on Sunday night, where four men attacked him. The men originally intended to rob Bhalerao, but decided to assault him because they considered him a Muslim. They told him he should “go back to Iraq." According to police, he tried to explain that he was Hindu. The attackers beat him with a chair and kicked Bhalerao so badly that they broke his jaw.

They then hog-tied him and stuffed clothes in his mouth to prevent him from calling out for help. They then forced Bhalerao into the trunk of his own car and drove him to another town, and stabbed him three times in before running away, the police said.
Two teenage girls who were driving by picked him up off the street called the police. He is recovering after undergoing emergency surgery.

Police have arrested three of the attackers. The three are Tyrell Tavarez and Ryan Marsh, both 17, and Christopher Pereira, 20, all of New Bedford.

A coalition of Indian American organizations along with various other community organizations are holding a rally this Wednesday, July 2 at 7:30pm on the steps of the New Bedford City Hall, to raise funds for the victim and to press for the fullest prosecution. The police expect to file civil rights charges.

The Indian American Forum for Political Education is collecting funds for this cause, the funds collected will be used for Saurabh's recovery and his needs. Please write your check to:
