Chicago Police Deny Hate-crime in Drowning of Vietnamese Fisherman

Police have arrested a 31 year old skinhead in the death of Sept. 1 dawn attack on an elderly Vietnamese man, who drowned as a result of the attack.

John Haley, part of a group of five young whites, pushed Du Doan from the back into Montrose Harbor. Doan, a retired father of three, could not swim. He drowned almost immediately when other fishermen could not save him with poles and nets.

Despite Haley's involvement in similar incidents involving other Asians, Chicago Police claimed that there was no proof that the attack was hate-motivated. On July 31, Haley pushed another man who "appeared to be Asian" into the water, but who swam to safety. Earlier the same day as the attack on Doan, Haley and his friends confronted another Asian fisherman. The fisherman stood his ground; the group left after spitting at his feet. There have also been other reports of Asians being harassed at the Montrose Harbor area recently.
