East Buffet Restaurant Workers on Strike in NYC!

In late August, waiters and buspersons launched a strike at the East Buffet Restaurant in Huntington, Long Island, where the employer stole workers' tips and then retaliated against them for speaking out. The workers -- all of whom are Chinese immigrants -- are picketing daily during the lunch and dinner shifts.

The workers have maintained their strike with daily pickets for weeks -- and need your support! For more information and to learn how you can get involved, contact the Justice Will Be Served! Campaign.

Employees at East Buffet worked over 65 hours a week and earned very low wages -- such as $66 a week or $1 an hour. They have had to rely heavily on customers' tips in order to make a living, but the management regularly stole a portion of this hard-earned money so their earnings remained low. Over the years, the management constantly used harassment and intimidation to chill any dissent from the workers.

Workers recently came together to improve their working conditions and unionize, deciding to join the local 318 Restaurant Workers Union. But a day after a petition for a union was filed, the employer responded by interrogating each one of the workers who supported the union and threatening to change their conditions for the worse.

Since August 21, the restaurant has been stealing all of the workers' tips!
