Chinese American Workers at Star Toyota Fired in Fight for Labor Contract

In July 2002, Star Toyota in New York illegally fired its workers and illegally entered into a contract with an independent so-called union. The National Labor Relations Board found the dealership guilty of violating federal labor law and was ordered to reinstate all illegally fired workers with full back pay on wages and benefits.

Ten out of fourteen fired workers are Chinese American, and many of the company’s customers are from the Chinese community in Flushing and Bayside, Queens.

The workers are members of Local 259 United Automobile Workers of America. Ongoing talks since October have been led nowhere. The local is building a coalition of labor, religious and community groups to build support for a fair labor agreement. They are asking for a boycott of STAR TOYOTA until they reach an agreement with its workers.
