Struggle Continues At Jin Asian Cuisine

(Saugus, MA.)  The struggle with the Jin Asian Cuisine Restaurant continues.  Women are relegated to the lowest paying jobs.  Workers are paid less than minimum wage and no overtime.  Workers work 12-15 hours per day, 6 days per week.  Workers suffer health problems from being overworked.  Workers get hurt working under hazardous conditions.  Six workers were fired for speaking up about the conditions.

Under pressure from the workers, MassCOSH, a workers' safety organziation, and the Chinese Progressive Association, owner Li-Ling Lam, finally met with the workers and promised changes, but has done nothing.  Many people have called and written to Lam, but he hasn’t responded to the pressure.

We have to keep pressuring him.  Call 781-231-8888.  Fax 781-231-8899.  Please email amee@cpaboston.org if you call or fax.  The workers deserve to be treated like people.

The workers’ demands are as follows:

  1. Proper training and equipment so workers can perform their jobs safely
  2. Reinstatement of the fired workers
  3. Payment of stolen tips and wages and future compliance with minimum wage and overtime law
  4. Allow injured workers to receive workmen’s compensation in a timely manner by cooperating with the insurer
  5. Compliance with state law about giving workers rest breaks to reduce health hazards
  6. Treat workers with respect and dignity; to demonstrate good faith, post signs at visible locations in the workplace stating workers’ rights to a safe workplace, to overtime and a minimum wage, and to organize
