NEW PRIORITIES
The Program of the Unity Organizing Committee

Our Vision

We come together from all walks of life, with a vision of a just society and a better life for all.

The Cold War has ended, but democracy is unrealized and military might continues to terrorize the world. Here in the U.S., unemployment, poverty and racist violence rise, while access to housing and health care disappear. Half of all African American children grow up in poverty. Young people can get drugs, but not an education. African Americans and Latinos serve on the front lines of war more than any other peoples, but are denied human rights at home.

Indeed, we have seen the peace dividend disappear in the Persian GuIf The gulf war is the most recent painful expression of our nation's thoroughly misguided priorities. It showed our government's inhumanity towards nations and peoples of color. The Bush Administration's *ion of a "new world order" threatens to derail our post-Cold War hopes for a world based on peace, democracy, mutual respect and cooperation.

Things do not have to be this way. We join with many here and abroad who are standing up, getting organized and taking destiny into our own hands. We seek a basic reordering of society and its priorities so that human needs come before private profit. We envision a society not run for the benefit of a wealthy few, but for the benefit of the people. We, the people, in our millions, comprise the true wealth and potential of this nation.

We envision a United States where all people can achieve their full potential as human beings and as productive members of society. Everyone should be able to provide a decent life for themselves and their families, contribute meaningfully to developing the nation's wealth and culture, and democratically determine how the fruits of our labor are distributed and used. We envision a United States in which peoples of color can achieve full equality and self determination, women have equal rights and all children are protected and nourished.
